Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about our organic worm castings, recycling units, and agroforestry models.

Wesakhulila Self Help Group (WSHG)

WSHG stands for Wesakhulila Self Help Group. We are a collaborative group of companies highlighting climate change impacts and promoting climate-smart agriculture.

Our mission is to combat climate change by delivering practical, climate-smart agricultural solutions. We bridge the gap between vulnerability and resilience by running on-farm trials and designing systems that work for the people who actually grow food.

We are headquartered in Trans Nzoia County, Cherangany Sub-County, at the Kaplamai Location (Sibanga Market - California Village), just off the Kitale-Kachibora Road in Kenya.

Gliricidia sepium Agroforestry

Gliricidia sepium is a medium-sized, fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing tree that belongs to the legume family. It is one of the most widely cultivated multipurpose trees and is highly valued for green manure, animal fodder, firewood, and living fences.

By incorporating its leafy biomass into the soil, Gliricidia fixes nitrogen and adds crucial organic matter. This practice can increase crop yields (particularly maize) by 150–300% per hectare per year in impoverished soils, drastically reducing the need to apply chemical fertilizers.

For green manure, trees are typically spaced 0.5–1 meter apart within rows that are 3–4 meters apart. For living fences, spacing can be as dense as 50 x 50 cm. For dedicated woodlots, a 1 x 1 meter spacing is recommended.

Gliricidia is highly tolerant to frequent pruning. In growing seasons, they can be pruned every 2–3 months. After seasonal crops are harvested, the trees are left to grow freely as fallow.

A single tree can produce 1.2–4.0 kg of dry wood per year. Depending on stocking, a single hectare can yield 21–28 tons of dry wood annually. Trees left uncut for seed production can yield 75–180 kg of seed per hectare per year (with roughly 8,000 seeds per kilogram).

Cherangany Vermifarm

Operating under the auspices of WSHG and located in Kitale, Kenya, Cherangany Vermifarm specializes in the production of nutrient-enhanced 100% organic worm castings and domestic organic waste recycling units.

It is a 100% organic, ecological, and non-toxic fertilizer obtained from the excrement of worms. It naturally increases soil microflora, improves water retention, regulates pH balance, and supplies plants with concentrated nutritive elements, enzymes, and growth hormones.

We exclusively utilize Eisenia foetida, also known as the Red California Worm. They are renowned for their fast breeding, quick reproduction, and efficient transformation of cattle manure, plant residues, and organic wastes into high-quality compost.

Benefits include improved plant stamina, faster growth, increased root development, and enhanced resistance to root diseases. The compost solubilizes locked-up nutrients like phosphorus and potassium, enabling the rapid rehabilitation of soils impoverished by chemical use, and can improve overall crop productivity by at least 30%.

Yes! We design, manufacture, and distribute compact domestic organic waste recycling units. These enable households and offices to transform everyday backyard and kitchen wastes—such as vegetable peels, leftovers, and eggshells—directly into premium worm castings right on-site.

Solar Water Pumping Systems

Vertical Water Gardens are innovative, space-saving hydroponic systems designed for rural homesteads. They allow households to grow high-density, fresh vegetables year-round using minimal water and space, directly attached to their homes.

Solar-powered irrigation systems replace expensive, polluting diesel pumps. They provide a reliable, renewable energy source to pump water, drastically reducing operational costs for farmers while conserving the environment.

Biogas Plant Construction

A biogas plant captures methane emissions from organic waste, such as cow dung and agricultural residue. It converts this waste into clean, renewable cooking gas and nutrient-rich bio-slurry fertilizer.

It provides a smoke-free cooking alternative, reducing respiratory diseases and the time spent gathering firewood. It also mitigates deforestation and provides a potent organic fertilizer for crops.

Research & Nutrient Enhancement

WSHG conducts on-farm trials in partnership with agricultural bodies like KALRO. We test and optimize ecological farming methods, soil nutrient enhancements, and climate-resilient crop varieties tailored to our region.
